A child's Innocence

The birth of a new born child is always a thing of great joy. People gather to congratulate the parents and of course to admire the infant. People are naturally this way. There's just something about babies that we can't help but smile and ogle at them. We can't help but feel different, we feel enlightened, drawn by their innocence. Jealous perhaps, that we are no longer as innocent as we once were. But beyond this, we are awed at the miracle of life.

A baby can symbolize a lot of things: helplessness, innocence peace, purity and life. They are of constant need of nurturing and feeding. They are of constant need of love and guidance. Perhaps these are the reasons why we are so drawn to them. We are all transported back to a time of innocence and laughter and simple things whenever we look upon the face of a child. And perhaps this serves as a reminder for us that the world need not be so complicated. There is this feeling of enlightenment is us when we see those innocent faces smile or by simply watching them as they sleep. So peaceful, serene and beautiful. We go back to a time where we are babies ourselves  at peace and innocent.

But nature must take its course. We grow up and we learn that everything is not beautiful and that peace is impossible in a world gradually consumed by capitalism and technology. Where greed is the way to survive and where innocence is translated as ignorance. Forgetting that we were once babies ourselves, we are stripped off of everything that is young and peaceful.  Or so we think.

Growing up is a part of life. But it doesn't mean that we are no longer needy as we once were when we were babies. Perhaps the enlightenment we feel whenever we look upon a child is God's reminder, not only of the life that surrounds us, but also we were once babies ourselves. And that at some early point in our lives, we were filled with simple joys: the warmth of our mother's bosom, the warm milk, the comfort of our cribs. More than that, we are reminded as well that we are still babies craving for that special warmth and peace - constantly searching for things that could satisfy us. We need the warmth of God's love and we are helpless without Him. We need continuous nurturing and feeding so that we may grow in beauty, grace and love.

As the song goes "Deep inside this armour, the warrior is a child", we must humble ourselves before God for we are helpless without him. He is the one who give us life. We are in need of spiritual feeding and nurturing. We need not be jealous of child's innocence and peace for we are children ourselves and through the guidance of our Father, we may experience the warmth of His love and peacefulness in our spirits.
